Why was my transaction returned by the bank?
A transaction return indicates a failure in processing your transaction after it is sent to the payment network.
Note: This is different from a transaction decline, which happens immediately in the merchant app/website and doesn't get sent to the payment network at all.
Transactions may be returned by your bank when presented for payment for any of the following reasons:
- Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF): Your bank account didn't have the full funds to pay for a transaction at the time the network attempted to process it. This is the most common return type in both US and Canada.
- Admin Returns: These are usually related to issues connecting to your bank account during processing. This can happen if the account is closed or the account information incorrect.
- Stopped: You instructed your financial institution to stop the transaction while it was being processed.
- Unauthorized: You claimed you did not authorize the transaction. Any money withdrawn will be refunded to the merchant.
- Frozen: Payment was attempted from a frozen account. This may be due to specific actions taken by your financial institution, or by legal actions taken and enforced by the bank.
Note: To learn more about the reason for a specific transaction return, contact your financial institution.
