Trustly Product Presentation Standards
Table of content
The primary purpose of the Product Presentation Standards is to drive consistent, optimized merchant implementations. Implementation is categorized into three commercial levels: Platinum, Gold, and Silver. Each presentation standard defines specific criteria that merchants must meet to achieve certification.
Adhering to these Product Presentation Standards ensures:
- Ongoing alignment with integration best practices
- Maximum conversion rates and share of checkout
- Full compliance with Trustly branding and legal requirements under the Trustly full guarantee service
Core optimization drivers
- Naming and branding: Official Trustly Payment Marks must be utilized. A fully compliant payment mark consists of three required elements: the product name ("Online Banking"), recognizable bank icons, and the brand presence ("via Trustly").
- Placement and endorsement: Position Trustly first in the express checkout lineup on the shopping cart page, or first and preselected in the primary payment lineup.
- User experience: Minimize steps to bank authentication. The optimal setup embeds a widget with bank tiles directly in the checkout flow, enabling single-click access to bank sign-in.
- Informational tooltips: Include a "Learn more" or help icon element featuring the standard Trustly product description.
- Incentives: Provide financial or operational user benefits when applicable (for example, "Save $2 per bill payment when you pay with Online Banking").
General compliance requirements
- Hosted assets: Utilizing official Trustly-hosted assets is a strict requirement for the certification and launch of your integration. Merchants must not host Trustly marks, buttons, or widgets on their own servers.
- Account on file requirements: For returning, signed-in users who have added a bank account to their profile, merchants must display the Bank Name (or Logo) and the Bank Account Name when presenting the saved payment method. These details are securely retrieved via the Trustly API.
- NACHA authorization compliance: Depending on the use case, the Trustly Lightbox must display specific legal language. For payment transactions, NACHA authorization language and the transaction amount must be displayed. For account onboarding (data-only), NACHA authorization language and amount lines must be omitted.
- Content strings (fallback tracking): If a merchant's UI cannot accommodate hosted image marks, merchants must utilize Trustly content strings. These are trackable text strings (for example, "Online Banking with Trustly") that ensure tracking compliance and UX optimization without requiring full image assets.
Presentation standards by tier
The following section defines the operational requirements and criteria for each commercial tier—Platinum, Gold, and Silver. Merchants must meet these standards to optimize conversion rates and maintain eligibility under the Trustly full guarantee service.
Platinum standard
The Platinum Standard delivers the fastest, most frictionless experience for completing payments and linking bank accounts.
- Express checkout: Connects the customer's bank account directly to the merchant site and automatically populates their shipping and billing details. This setup is ideal for online merchants seeking to eliminate checkout friction.
- Express sign-in and sign-up: Authenticates the user's bank account to establish a profile. Once onboarded, customers can leverage their saved account on file for future payments or payouts. This setup is ideal for online marketplaces, gig economy platforms, and creator payout workflows.
Requirements and criteria
- Naming, mark, and benefit message: Display the "Express Checkout" button alongside the official Trustly logo.
- Placement and endorsement: Position first in the express checkout lineup on the shopping cart page.
- User experience: Bypasses manual shipping forms and standard payment lineups. Shipping information automatically populates on the final review page.
- Tooltip: Where space permits, include a "What is this?" helper link explaining Express Checkout benefits and security assurances.
- Incentives: Optional merchant-offered incentives.
Gold standard
The Gold Standard embeds the Trustly Widget directly into the main payment lineup, allowing users to select their bank and log in with a single click.
Requirements and criteria
- Naming and mark: Display "Online Banking" alongside bank icons and the Trustly logo, adapted to the merchant interface.
- Placement and endorsement: Position first and preselected in the main payment lineup. A "Preferred" endorsement tag is strongly recommended.
- Benefit message: Configured within the widget tailored to Gaming, Non-Gaming Payments, or Non-Gaming Data use cases.
- User experience: The embedded widget allows bank selection directly within the checkout page without redirecting away from the merchant site.
- Tooltip: Include a "Learn more" link inside the widget frame.
- Incentives: Optional merchant-offered incentives.
Silver standard
For payment layouts that cannot accommodate the embedded widget, the Silver Standard provides a streamlined two-click bank login experience.
Requirements and criteria
- Naming, mark, and benefit message: Display "Online Banking" with accompanying bank icons and integrated benefit copy.
- Placement and endorsement: Position first in the payment lineup. A "Preferred" or "Recommended" tag is encouraged.
- User experience: Selecting Online Banking opens the bank selection widget on the subsequent screen, requiring two clicks to reach bank sign-in.
- Tooltip: Where space permits, include a "Learn more" link below the Online Banking option.
- Incentives: Optional merchant-offered incentives.
Additional services policy
To ensure users can always complete their transactions, Trustly offers the following fallback methods for payments and account verification when instant bank connectivity is unavailable.
Manual Electronic Check (MEC)
Serves as an electronic check fallback when a user's financial institution is not available for direct online banking sign-in.
- Step 1: The user selects "Enter account manually" within the flow.
- Step 2: The user enters their routing and account numbers manually.
Manual Challenge Deposit Verification (MCD)
Serves as a micro-deposit verification fallback when real-time account verification is unavailable for a financial institution.
- Step 1: The user selects "Enter account manually" within the flow.
- Step 2: The user enters their account details to initiate small test deposits for validation.
Visual asset exceptions (invisible pixel)
If a merchant's environment strictly prohibits the integration of recommended visual assets, Trustly permits the use of a 1x1 transparent invisible pixel to track payment page impressions and ensure compliance. This exception requires explicit approval; merchants must speak with their Engagement Manager or the Trustly Solutions team to configure this implementation.
